Becki,
The only comment I can make, and it doesn't altogether disagree with what you are saying, but, it is my firm belief that the vast majority of these drivers that use the excuse of deadlines, are doing just that.
The much maligned 'DEADLINE', is the excuse they use to justify driving with no concern for any other road user, and that can include other truck drivers.
Now I know the response I'm probably going to get from this, but, if the deadline is so important, and you can make such good time by going faster, how come they spend so much time in the roadhouse.
Surely, if you must get it there, just take the necessary stops and keep at it at a sensible pace. The reult will be the same.
It really is time some of these blokes started driving like other drivers mattered more than their freight. Trust me, you're making up a half an hour by speeding between cameras won't matter when the freight gets to the other end and then sits there for a couple of hours waiting to be delivered.
Cheers

Hi Becki. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and observations with readers. Your letter certainly deserves "letter of the week" status. I am often saddened at the devastating and long-lasting impact the "cowboys" in the trucking industry have not only in terms of increased risk of road trauma to other road users but also on the reputations of the majority of drivers within the industry who are proud of the work they do, who DO the right thing and who deserve enormous respect from the community for the work they do.

I have often said that I can think of no other occupation in this country where so many lives are lost yet so little has been achieved in terms of stemming the carnage.

Our new National Road Safety Hotline proposal - available for viewing Tuesday August 19 on this site is the 1st step - we believe - in "modifying" dangerous driver attitudes on the road. Your comment "removing licences from cowboys is the only way to rid the rot" also applies to other road users.

It is heartening to see so many truck drivers coming forward in support of the work we are trying do do, contributing workable solutions to an issue close to the heart of all Australians. Stay safe

Kind regards
Lyndal
